Producing materials bearing the printed word usually means using paper, most of which comes from trees - slow-growing plants which take decades to replace with trees of like-size. Their numbers are diminishing much too rapidly and we enjoy having trees around, so we decided to look for alternatives and we found them.

We're pleased to announce that the Bodega Land Trust's The Potluck Cookbook is printed on 24 lb. smooth writing paper, made from bamboo, which takes four years to mature. Planted and harvested by contract farmers, the bamboo (a tropical grass) is grown in Thailand where there are no Giant Pandas whose diet consists only of certain varieties of bamboo (found in China where they live). The bamboo is processed into Pulp and the non-toxic effluent is used to irrigate living bamboo.

The pulp is shipped to Appleton, Wisconsin (near Green Bay) where it is made into paper which is both acid-free and elementally chlorine free.

The cookbook's cover is 120# cockle finish and is made entirely from organically grown, naturally colored cotton Fox Fibre ®. Produced without using bleach or dyes, the cotton comes in natural shades of green and brown, and the use of organic cultivation methods, along with small batch custom production ensures a high-quality paper with strength and archival characteristics.

The covers are printed in soy inks, and The Potluck Cookbook is produced entirely by local, independently. owned businesses. Maureen Lomasney designed the cookbook and G-WIZ Graphics and Printing in Sebastopol managed the production and printing.
